Newsletter - 28th June 2011

Prescription medicines.

We were very pleased to learn from the media that all persons registered under the Group Practice Medical Scheme will be entitled to free medicines whether or not one or both are in employment.

Not only will this welcome concession add to patients’ quality of life, but very importantly now confirms our view that senior citizenship starts at the age of 60 for both men and women.

Prostate Support Group.

We are pleased to report that the Prostate Cancer Support Group has been quite busy lately with their awareness programme and has also had the support from Paula Ingram who drove a Harley Davidson from UK to Gibraltar raising funds for Cancer Research. The Harley Davidson Club of Gibraltar rode out into Spain to escort her into Gibraltar.

The Group is now making arrangement for the Lunar Walk which is being held on 1st.July and which for the first time, the Prostate Cancer Support Group will be taking part together with Breast Cancer Support Group. It is indeed most encouraging to see how in Gibraltar groups get together and help each other in their quest to improve the quality of life of sufferers and families.

The Group was also invited by the Round Table to an informal dinner where Mr. Sene gave a very interesting presentation on the prostate which adds and supports the Group’s campaign for awareness.

Primary Care Centre.

It has been reported to us that patients, particularly senior citizens, who go to the Health Centre early in the morning before the Centre opens hoping to get an appointment with the doctor of their choice, invariably have to stand and wait outside the reception area where no seating is available.

We have requested the Primary Care Centre’s management to provide a few seats specially designated for senior citizens as it is the elderly who suffer most when standing for long periods.

Association Meetings.

For some time the association held its twice monthly meetings at the Irish Town premises of the Gibraltar Federation of Small Businesses to whom we are indeed most grateful.

However for a number of circumstances and reasons which are more convenient to association committee members, meetings are now being held at the St. Bernard’s Social Club, Community Centre, Zoca Flank.

We normally meet the first and third Wednesday of every month but these are subject to change due to members’ personal commitments.
